Types of Poems

What is a dramatic monologue? A poem in the form of a speech or narrative by an imagined person, in which the speaker inadvertently reveals aspects of their character while describing a particular situation or series of events.

Characteristics of a Dramatic Monologue

[ First person speaker
[    Speaker is usually at an emotional point
[  Aspects of speaker’s personality revealed by speech
[  Speaker unintentionally reveals preferences, bias, level of education, profession and taste       
[  Always has irony
[   Usually can deduce the auditors reveals preferences, bias, level of education, profession and taste even though they are silent

What is a sonnet? A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line.

Characteristic of a Sonnet

[  14 lines
[  Octave(first four lines) outline the problem, and the next four expands
[  Cestete- last six lines that offer a solution to the problem outlined in the octave. At line 8 there is volta or Turn.
[  Rhyme scheme for the first eight lines is ‘abba abba’, and last six ‘cde cde’

Types of sonnets

[  Italian- rhyme scheme abba abba cde cde
[  English ends with a rhyming couplet
